Let's talk parking

Consultation has concluded

The beauty of the main shopping precinct of Queen Street, is that it is flanked by two main roads on either side (Hurley Street and Moore-Oxley Bypass) that allow it to potentially be bypassed by traffic. It has multiple, large scale parking lots that are within 25 metres and are linked to the street by arcades and footpaths. Which means that it’s possible to test some ideas that would make it more of a people place than a parking space.

We're testing your ideas.

Parking space or people place?

Given the amount of parking within the Queen Street precinct, we want to try swapping some car parking spaces for open places that could be used for dining, relaxing or playing. You can choose from the ideas below, or add other suggestions of what you would like to see in these spaces that we could consider.

What's there now?

Queen Street (Cordeaux Road to Dumaresq Street) is 20 metres wide, including footpaths, car parking and the road.

It’s a one-way street that has 45(degree) angled, nose-in parking on one side and parallel parking on the other.

The footpath varies in size, from 5.5 metres wide in some sections, down to 2.8 metres in others.

In some sections, the kerb is extended to narrow the road to indicate entry into a slow speed traffic and high volume pedestrian area.

There is occasional seating, outdoor dining and trees, as well as shade cloth over the street in some parts.

There is a public square where Lithgow Street intersects Queen Street with shade canopies, which has event capacity.

Why should we try anything else?

We know that this is a busy street. It’s the spine of our city centre that connects people with destinations. By reducing the amount of traffic in the street we can make some adjustments to accommodate places for people to relax, interact, dine and play. These spaces will be attractive, add to the greenery and start to give the street a lift that would make it more appealing. More of a people place.

What we’ll trial.

Semi-Permanent interventions will include temporary measures along the street and structures for kerb build-outs to ensure accessibility and durability of interventions.

We’re going to install some temporary park-style areas in a number of parking spaces to see how they go. These installations could include grass, trees and seating for people to use to dine, relax and enjoy.

They’ll be installed in April and we’ll keep monitoring everyone’s feedback and watching to see how successful they are in making it a more safe, comfortable, attractive and flexible public space for everyone.

    Truck parking.

by Jason, almost 3 years ago
I’ve parked my truck at home in woodbine for the last 11 years.

After moving a few months ago to a new address also in woodbine I now have neighbors that do nothing but complain. I’ve been fined for the truck and my cars. After talking with council rangers I’ve moved the truck to Culverston road minto. If you park on Airds road the trucks get broken into and damaged. Culverston road is the safest option.

Yesterday I was informed with other drivers that park there this toad will be closed and become a private road.

Council has not informed... Continue reading

Campbelltown Hospital Parking charge is robbery

by Ben, about 3 years ago
$10.10 an hour to park at Campbelltown Hospital is absolutely ridiculous! People are struggling to pay their medical expenses and now they are slogged with massive parking charges.

This is unacceptable. The charges for general services such as parking in NSW are a big reason I am moving out of this state. Had enough of this state government, and local councils, and their money grabbing tactics. It is just too expensive to live here anymore.

    Parking = Convenience

by SR, about 3 years ago
People go places because of convenience, if I cannot find a car space I will move on. If you take away all of the car spaces this will happen.

Also, business owners need to be able to park their cars and stay in their business all day without fear of receiving a fine, if not they may find another place to do business. There are very few all day spots and this can be determined by noting that the two main free public car parking area's backing onto the Moore Oxley bypass are full before 9am. Car parks don't need... Predestraisation of Queen Street

by Hello, about 3 years ago

Pedestrainising Queen Street is the way forward. While this is a really good direction, fully predestrainising the area between Cordeaux and Drumaresq street is something that will inevitably have to happen. The council have stated in various documents that the CBD should be people focused and not car-prioritised however this is a really good start!

I wish I could have selected all options regarding what should be added on top of the parking spots since anything is better than what we currently have. I hope greenery means more established trees meaning more shade, more public art would be great (Coogan... Continue reading

    Factory Outlet on Queen St

by gloria.ace, about 3 years ago

The factory outlet is slowly decaying over time. I believe it could be repurposed into a great community centre of sorts, like moving the library there to give it some new life, adding a youth space etc.
