What is car share?

Car share is a service that provides on-demand, short-term access to a car for registered members. Members of a car share scheme can book a vehicle, pick it up from its designated parking space and go about their business before returning the car to its designated space. The service is designed to provide a cost-efficient alternative to owning and maintaining a private vehicle for people that generally only need a car for occasional trips.

Benefits of car share in Campbelltown

Mobility as a service - use a car when you need one, without owning it

  • The average private car is only in use about 4% of the time and parked the remaining 96%.

  • Car share lets members book a nearby vehicle and pay only for the time and distance they drive.

Save money on the real cost of owning a car

  • Owning a car can be expensive once you pay for petrol, insurance, maintenance, registration and tolls, that can equate up to approximately $25,000 per year.

  • Car share helps reduce these costs as members only pay when they actually use the vehicle, which if you drive less than 8000km a year, it ends up being cheaper than owning your own car.

  • Car share is a practical way to reduce household transport costs, while still having access to a car when you need one.

Fewer parked cars, more space for community

  • Car share helps reduce the cost of privately owned cars on the road and parked on local streets.

  • One car share vehicle frees up to nine vehicles' worth of street space, according to research by the Committee for Sydney

  • Fewer cars, means more available street space

The Car Share Policy outlines Council’s approach to the allocation, management and installation of dedicated parking spaces for use by Authorised Car Share Operators, on land under the care and control of Council, including on-street and off-street parking bays. It applies to new and Authorised Car Share Operators that are looking to establish Dedicated Car Share Bays in Campbelltown. Each proposed new Dedicated Car Share Bay will be reviewed within the context of the Policy and community consultation will be undertaken before it is approved and installed.
