Consultation has concluded

We were lucky enough to spend some time with Gerard and Lorraine from Guitar World and Drum World, here is their story.

When did you start your business / how long have you been operating?

Guitar World and Drum World opened in Campbelltown back in 1987. Long time locals of Campbelltown might remember Mickey's Night Club - we were originally located downstairs from the nightclub until we moved to the current location in the City Arcade in 1992. This was the year that we also expanded into teaching music lessons.

Why did you start your business?

Bruno, the original owner, created Guitar World and Drum World to support and help grow the music and arts scene throughout Campbelltown and the Macarthur region. Bruno has a great passion for live music, and knew that Campbelltown didn't have enough instrument supply stores to support the music industry, as most of the music stores back then were predominately record stores. Even today, Bruno is still passionate about music and Campbelltown - still dropping into the store to help out on occasion.

Why did you choose to open your business in Campbelltown? What do you love about Campbelltown?

Bruno chose to open the store in Campbelltown as a way to support local musicians and help provide them with the opportunity to perform at local gigs. The move to City Arcade in 1992 allowed us to combine three separate stores into one big space and expand into teaching music and singing as well. Today, we are still operating as Guitar World and Drum World in this same location.

Tell us about you or your business?

We are all about the customer experience. We take the time to make sure that we get to know the customer so that we can make the right recommendation. This is important because we want people to use the instrument they purchase, take care of it and appreciate it. Helping the customer select the right type of instrument for their needs creates a great experience for them, and hopefully it means that they will want to continue coming back to our store. We regularly have customers return for themselves, and or they will tell their friends or family to come and visit – the power of word of mouth is one of the most powerful resources to have.

We also have teaching schools refer their clients to come and purchase instruments from us. When this happens, we support their customers by ensuring we provide them value for their money – we are not in business just to sell the most expensive equipment in store.

As well as selling a huge range of musical instruments and accessories, we also teach music lessons in:

  • Acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar
  • Piano and keyboard
  • Singing
  • Violin
  • Drums

We also have a fully equipped recording studio and a sound engineering booth available in store.

We are passionate about supporting and giving back to the community by participating in local fund raisers and donating equipment and money to organisations such as the Ambarvale Disability, Bingo Auction night , Ruse Public school donation , Macarthur Country Music Awards and more. The opportunity to work with disability services has been one of the most rewarding collaborative opportunities - some of our customers have autism and learning how to play an instrument has provided them with confidence that has spread into other areas of their lives.

We are really proud to support events and causes that give back to the local community. Helping to support our local talent is what we set out to achieve every time we open our doors, no matter the cost.

What is something special or unique about your business?

We are the third owners of the business, but we are proud that we have maintained two or three generations of return customers that continue to come to Guitar World and Drum World for their musical equipment or lessons.

We are passionate about supporting the community and local talent, and collaborating together with other businesses. The expansion of Guitar World into Drum World started with an event at Bradbury Hotel, who have always been supportive of the live local music scene. The hotel held a "Drum Off" competition for a band looking for a drummer. Different drummers, one by one, would play with the band, until the band selected a winner. A runner up by the name of Stephanie, is an invaluable member of the Drum World team.

Prior to working with for Guitar World, an employee named Andrea Krakovska wanted to provide the Make A Wish Charity Foundation with a musical opportunity. Andrea approached Guitar World and together we created the Macarthur Battle of the Bands. Guitar and Drum World supplied instruments and the event raised money for the foundation.

For the last three years we have also helped to connect local young bands with an opportunity to play at Campbelltown RSL.
