Creating a Spark - toward energy sharing communities

Consultation has concluded

Local councils are providing the critical leadership required to act on climate change. Rapid population growth combined with significant investment in infrastructure has provided a once in a generation opportunity to shape a cleaner, greener and more prosperous future. The time to act is now.

This project seeks to provide a catalytic opportunity to enable residents and businesses, with and without the amenity or funding to install rooftop solar, to access locally generated, low cost, renewable energy, specifically through energy sharing.

Energy sharing enables communities to benefit from combining and sharing renewable energy. In doing so, an energy sharing scheme:

  • Creates low carbon communities
  • Supports the local economy
  • Contributes to a more resilient electricity network

However, there are still a lack of consolidated and easy-to-understand resources to guide councils and developers on ways to enable energy sharing, particularly in NSW.

Campbelltown City Council, Landcom and Sourced Energy were successful in receiving a Research and Innovation grant from Local Government NSW and the Department of Planning Industry and Environment. We are collaborating to develop a resource for local government policy makers and developers which will support the implementation of energy sharing networks. We are also working together to develop an energy sharing network in Macarthur Gardens North, which will feed into the resource/technical guide.

Get Involved

As part of this work, it will be very helpful to hear the views and experiences of professionals who intersect with (or could intersect with or support) energy sharing schemes. The survey is short (approx. 8 minutes) and will help us significantly in developing and targeting the guide/resource.

This survey closes on Friday 11 June 2021.
