Construction starts on Campbelltown Billabong Parklands
Designs have been finalised and construction has commenced on the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands, a game changing new water recreation and tourist attraction on the heart of the city.
Background
A concept design for the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands was announced as successful for funding under the Western Parkland City Liveability Program in January 2019. The concept was shared with the community through the media in 2018 as a ‘wish list’ project for the area.
The billabong includes a range of recreational water play facilities over a four hectare site on the corner of Moore-Oxley Bypass and The Parkway, at Apex Park beside Bradbury Oval.
The design has been inspired by the unique natural Campbelltown environment including the rock pools, waterfalls and rapids of the Dharawal National Park.
A new water facility was identified as necessary to provide an accessible outdoor recreation space for people to reduce the impact of the intense heat experienced in the city and across the South West Sydney region.
Consultation Process
Throughout the extensive consultation process which included surveys, pop-up community events, family fun day, stakeholder interviews and a council workshop, we heard how excited our community is for this project.
You told us what is most important to you and we’ve listened. Plenty of grass, trees and shaded areas for social gatherings and a fun day out will be key elements surrounding the recreational water facility at the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands project.
The landscape features will be based on the local Dhawaral National Park and George River to reflect the importance of our local environment and Aboriginal culture.
We would like to thank all members of the community for their valuable feedback and contributions which were used to develop the final designs.
